Dr. Carter is Founder and Executive Director of HUES Women's Health Advocacy Institute, advancing health equity for women of color through advocacy, inclusivity, and wellness. She launched HUES in 2022 after navigating autoimmune disease within culturally inadequate systems. Her research centers Black women's health narratives, using interviews, focus groups, community-engaged methods, and narrative and mixed-methods analysis to explore how cultural, social, and structural forces shape health beliefs, care access, symptom description, medical interactions, and intergenerational health knowledge to guide culturally responsive education, policy, and advocacy.
